As our society becomes increasingly fast paced, nutritional deficiency becomes more and more common. Because dietary supplements have various nutritional benefits, they are defined and categorized by the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA), enacted by Congress in 1994, under the general category of “food” and not drugs. Dietary supplements contain any one (or more) of the following: mineral, herb, vitamin, botanical, amino acid, enzymes, tissues, concentrate, constituent, extract or metabolite. Ideally, individuals would be able to eat the proper amounts of whole foods, including vegetables and fruits, each day. However, a variety of conditions make it difficult for people to maintain the proper amounts of nutrients within their body. Not to mention, many of the foods we consume today do not carry the same nutritional value that they once did. Food today is commonly produced with inexpensive methods and with a multitude of preservatives and less vitamins and minerals. Thus, the food we generally consume, especially on the go, do not allow us to maintain proper nutrient levels within the body. If left unattended, these low amounts of vitamins, minerals and nutrients can cause deficiencies that can lead to serious health problems. For instance, iron deficiencies may result in a wide variety of problematic symptoms, including confusion, brittle nails, constipation, dizziness, fatigue, depression and headaches. Dietary supplements can offer the nutritional content that may otherwise be missing based on a modern diet, including those from vitamin C and calcium. Such supplements may also help provide enough daily fiber, which is part of a complete diet and can help prevent and treat a variety of conditions, including heart disease and type 2 diabetes. Certain individuals are at greater risk of vitamin and nutrient deficiencies and may want to consider supplements as a way to help maintain proper bodily functions. Those who consume fewer than 1,600 calories each day, are vegan or vegetarian, are postmenopausal, pregnant or are breastfeeding should especially consider adding supplements to their daily diet. Additionally, those with certain medical conditions that impact the way the body absorbs, uses or excretes nutrients may want to consider dietary supplements. Such conditions that put individuals at higher risks of deficiency include: food allergies, chronic diarrhea or conditions that affect the liver, intestines, pancreas or gallbladder. Rather than rely on expensive medications, some individuals may benefit from simply adding dietary supplements to their daily healthcare regimen. Dietary supplements and herbal remedies are popular complementary or alternative products for people with a variety of chronic health problems, including arthritis, headaches, digestive problems and respiratory conditions. Information on the common uses, health benefits, and side effects of dietary supplements should be carefully researched and considered prior to use. Although supplements are regulated by the FDA as foods, they are regulated differently from drugs and other foods. Supplements are not intended to diagnose, prevent, cure, or treat disease. Additionally, supplements should be taken in conjunction with a healthy diet. Proper exercise is also necessary to maintain a healthy body and may improve the effectiveness of dietary supplements. Any dietary supplement should be taken after careful consideration. It’s obvious that there are many benefits to taking dietary supplements. Many of these supplements can treat a wide variety of conditions. For instance, many digestive conditions and even the common cold can be treated using ginger or other natural remedies. Anyone considering a dietary supplement should do research and talk to their healthcare provider. It’s important to check the label for active ingredients, nutrition and serving size information. Have reasonable expectations and be aware of any medications you are currently taking that may alter the effect of the dietary supplement. Expiration dates should also be considered. Dietary supplements can become less effective if used after the expiration date. Likewise, all supplements should be stored safely. Make certain that all supplements are kept in a secure location out of the hands of children. Store them in a cool, dry location and away from humid or hot areas such as the bathroom.
